There are two types of receptors on fat cells that control the movement of fat into and out of the fat cells – the alpha receptors and the beta receptors.

The number of alpha and beta-receptors is generally equal above the waist. In women, however, there are eight times more alpha-receptors than beta receptors below the waist, causing fat to be stored more readily on the abdomen, buttocks and thighs. To slim successfully, the beta receptors must be activated and the alpha receptors suppressed.
